Launching an e-learning platform is a different project than launching a single online course. A single course launch is a marketing and production project with a clear finish line. A platform launch is a product launch — you're building infrastructure, recruiting instructors, developing multiple courses simultaneously, and designing a repeating content production engine. The planning complexity scales accordingly, and a Gantt chart is the tool that keeps curriculum development, content production, platform engineering, and go-to-market from colliding.

Phase 1: Product Strategy and Platform Design (Months 1–3)
The first decisions define the entire project. Getting them wrong means rebuilding later.

- Per-course purchase: simplest model; each course sold individually; works well for specialized professional skills
- Cohort enrollment (premium pricing + community access + live elements): highest ASP ($500–$5,000+), strongest completion rates, requires instructor time per cohort
- Enterprise B2B licensing (team seats at negotiated rates): best for compliance training, professional development, and technical skills; requires SCORM/xAPI compliance and LMS integration capability
Learner persona: Define the learner with specificity — job title, experience level, learning goal, time available per week, and price sensitivity. A platform for entry-level data analysts and a platform for senior engineering leaders require completely different curriculum architecture, content format, and pricing.
Platform selection: Build vs. white-label vs. marketplace:
- White-label platforms (Thinkific, Kajabi, LearnWorlds, Teachable): fastest launch, predictable cost ($100–$500/month), limited customization, platform takes no revenue cut, full data ownership
- Marketplace (Udemy, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning): immediate distribution but platforms take 50–75% of revenue on marketplace sales, limited brand control, race-to-the-bottom pricing dynamics on Udemy
- Custom-built: highest cost ($50K–$500K+ depending on features), longest timeline, most flexibility — appropriate only for platforms expecting high B2B contract volume requiring custom integrations
Phase 2: Curriculum Architecture (Months 2–4)
Curriculum framework: Map the learning journey from beginner to advanced as a skills tree or competency model. Define every course, its prerequisites, its learning objectives, and its target learner level. This framework becomes the roadmap for all content development.
Subject matter expert (SME) recruitment: The quality of the platform depends on instructor quality. Options:
- Internal expertise: fastest path to content production but limits subject matter range
- External instructors on revenue share: standard model — offer 50–80% of per-course revenue to instructors who retain no rights, or a flat content rights fee for full ownership. Revenue share attracts experienced instructors who believe in the content; flat fee is better for platforms that need full control of the content for B2B licensing
- Corporate SME partnership: for B2B platforms, partner with companies to co-develop training content in exchange for enterprise licensing rights
Course development workflow: Design a repeatable process for every course so production scales:
- SME outreach and qualification
- Contract execution (content rights, revenue share, exclusivity, timeline)
- Curriculum outline (instructor develops; platform team reviews for learning design quality)

Production ratio: Plan 4–8 hours of total production effort (recording, editing, review, revision) per 1 finished hour of video. A 10-hour course requires 40–80 production hours minimum.
Supplemental materials: Each course should include downloadable resources (workbooks, templates, checklists), practice exercises or assignments, and quizzes. Budget 2–4 hours of design and development per finished video hour for supplemental materials.
Accessibility: Closed captions are required for ADA Section 508 compliance for government-funded platforms and are best practice for all platforms. Auto-caption tools (Descript, Otter.ai, Rev.com) generate a draft; plan 20–30 minutes of review and correction per video hour.
Phase 4: Technology and Infrastructure (Months 3–6)
Platform tech setup for white-label platforms: Configure learner authentication (SSO if B2B), course catalog and categorization, payment processing (Stripe integration is standard), completion tracking, certificate generation, and email automation (welcome series, progress nudges, completion certificates).
Video hosting and CDN: Most white-label platforms use Wistia, Vimeo, or their own CDN for video delivery. For custom builds, set up a CDN (Cloudflare Stream, AWS CloudFront + S3) to ensure video loads globally without buffering.
Analytics configuration: Define the key metrics you'll track from day one: course enrollment rate, lesson completion rate, course completion rate, time-on-platform per session, quiz pass rate, and Net Promoter Score at course completion. Set up tracking before any learners enroll — retroactive data is not recoverable.
SCORM/xAPI compliance (B2B requirement): If you're selling to corporate clients who need to track completion in their internal LMS (Cornerstone, Workday Learning, SAP SuccessFactors), your content must be packaged as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, or xAPI (Tin Can). Build this requirement into your production workflow from the start — retrofitting SCORM compliance to existing content is painful.
Mobile app (optional but increasingly expected): React Native or Flutter apps add 3–4 months of development and $50,000–$150,000+ in cost. For most platforms, a responsive web experience is sufficient at launch.
Phase 5: Go-to-Market (Months 6–8)
Instructor marketing support: Each instructor has an existing audience that can be activated at launch. Build instructor-specific marketing assets (course announcement templates, social media graphics, email copy) and provide them 4 weeks before launch.
SEO: E-learning platforms have strong organic search potential. Create optimized pages for each course and topic cluster. Target long-tail keywords (e.g., "learn SQL for business analysts" rather than "SQL course") where competition is lower and intent is higher.
Affiliate program: Offer 20–40% commissions to affiliate partners who drive enrollments. Set up affiliate tracking (Impact, PartnerStack, or Teachable's built-in affiliate system) before launch.

Building the Gantt
Structure the platform launch Gantt with five parallel tracks: Product Strategy, Curriculum Architecture, Content Production (one sub-track per course), Platform Tech, and Go-to-Market. The critical dependency is content production — the platform has nothing to sell until courses are complete. Set the target launch date and work backward: if launch is Month 8, content must be production-complete by Month 7, platform configuration finished by Month 6, and curriculum architecture complete by Month 4.
