Why teams are moving now
Microsoft retired Project Online on September 30, 2026 (Microsoft's lifecycle page). Large programs need a proper replacement decision. Many projects never needed that: they needed a schedule the people around the project can open. That is what gantt-chart.io is for.
Move a schedule in three steps
- Save the plan as Microsoft Project XML. Open the plan in Microsoft Project on your desktop. Choose File, then Save As, and pick XML Format (*.xml). gantt-chart.io reads XML, not binary .mpp files, so an .mpp has to be saved as XML first.
- Import the XML into gantt-chart.io. Sign in free and open a project. In the Outline panel choose Import data, pick the XML file (up to 2 MB), check the preview, then import. Phases become lanes, and each task keeps its start and finish dates, percent complete, owner and its links to other tasks.
- Check it, then share a read-only link. Compare the dates on your key tasks with the original. The critical path is drawn from the imported links. Then share a read-only link: the people who open it don't need an account or a Microsoft licence.
What comes across
- Tasks with their start and finish dates
- Phases as lanes, and sub-phases as groups inside them
- Percent complete and milestones
- Owners, from the plan's resource assignments
- Task links (finish-to-start, start-to-start, finish-to-finish and start-to-finish) with their lag in days
- A critical path drawn from those links
What doesn't
- Portfolio views, resource pools and resource levelling
- Cost, budget and earned value fields
- Custom working calendars: dates come in as calendar dates, and lags are rounded to whole days
- Binary .mpp files: save them as XML first

Frequently asked questions
- When did Project Online retire?
- Microsoft's lifecycle page lists Project Online's retirement date as September 30, 2026.
- Do my task links and critical path come across?
- Yes. Links between tasks in the XML file are imported with their type and lag, and gantt-chart.io draws the critical path from them. A link to a summary row (a phase) has no bar to point at, so it is left out.
- Can I import an .mpp file?
- No. Open it in Microsoft Project and save it as XML Format (*.xml), then import the XML.
- What does it cost?
- The Free plan holds 1 saved project with 1 AI credit a month and no downloads. Solo is a flat $12 a month for one person, with unlimited projects and downloads, including Microsoft Project XML.
- Can I get my plan back out?
- On Solo you can download the plan as Microsoft Project XML, CSV or JSON, or print it to PDF from your browser.
- Is this a replacement for a whole PMO?
- No. gantt-chart.io is for projects that need a clear, shared schedule. If you need portfolio reporting, resource pools or earned value, plan a fuller replacement for those programs.
