A good qualitative guide is a framework, not a script — skilled moderators follow the participant's energy, not the order of the guide.

Both tools require: internal review for clarity and strategic alignment, pilot testing with 2–3 internal respondents or live pilot sessions, revision based on pilot findings.

Phase 6: Fieldwork Execution (Weeks 6–10)

Fieldwork is when actual data collection happens. This phase has the fewest internal control points — you are dependent on participants, facilities, and technology.

For quantitative surveys: Launch survey to full sample. Monitor daily: response rate, completion rate, average survey duration (flags for speeders), and data quality (straight-liners, pattern responses). Close the field when target sample is achieved or fielding window closes.

For qualitative focus groups or IDIs: Sessions run on the scheduled calendar. The moderator runs the session while observers watch from a backroom or remote viewing link. Sessions are audio/video recorded for review during analysis.

Contingency planning: Build 20% buffer into your fieldwork timeline. If a focus group facility cancels, you need time to find an alternative. If online survey response rates are lower than expected, you need time to add panel sources.

Phase 7: Data Collection Deadlines

Hard deadlines during fieldwork prevent scope creep. Define: the final date after which no new survey responses will be accepted; the date by which all qualitative sessions must be complete; the date for translation delivery (for international research); and the date for verbatim transcription delivery (for recorded qualitative sessions).

These deadlines are not aspirational — they are required inputs for the analysis phase. Analysis cannot begin until the full data set is in hand and clean.

Phase 8: Data Cleaning and Coding (Weeks 10–12)

For quantitative data: Data cleaning removes invalid responses: speeders (completed too fast to have read the questions), straight-liners (selected the same answer for every question), duplicate responses (same IP address or device), and failed attention checks. After cleaning, calculate incidence rate and effective sample size. Apply weighting if the sample needs to be adjusted to match the target population profile.

For qualitative data: Coding is the process of organizing qualitative verbatims (transcripts, open-end responses) into themes. Build a codebook — a hierarchy of topics and themes — and apply it to all transcripts. This can be done manually or assisted by AI text analysis tools.

Data cleaning and coding are underestimated phases. Budget a full week for quantitative cleaning on a large survey, and 2 weeks for qualitative coding on a multi-group project.

Phase 9: Analysis and Insight Synthesis (Weeks 12–15)

Analysis is where data becomes insight. The distinction: data tells you what happened; insight explains why it happened and what it means for the decision the research was commissioned to inform.

Quantitative analysis: Cross-tabulations, statistical significance testing, segmentation analysis (cluster analysis or a priori segment comparisons), key driver analysis, correlation, regression.

Synthesis: The most important — and most neglected — step. Connect quantitative and qualitative findings into a coherent narrative that directly answers the research objectives from the brief. Every insight in the report should trace back to a research objective.

Phase 10: Report Writing (Weeks 15–17)

Structure the report around answers to the research objectives, not around the order in which questions were asked. Use visuals (charts, journey maps, persona cards) to communicate efficiently. Write executive summary last — it is a distillation of the full report, not a preview.

Format: most deliverables include a PowerPoint deck for the presentation plus a written report or data appendix. Confirm format preference with the client during the brief phase.

Phase 11: Stakeholder Presentation (Week 17–18)
