A successful deployment means employees show up on Monday and everything works exactly as it did before — but faster, more reliable, and more secure. The work that makes that possible happens over weeks or months and involves hardware procurement, physical installation, complex configuration, thorough testing, and a carefully choreographed cutover. None of that happens without a plan.

A Gantt chart is the planning tool that network infrastructure projects need. It makes hardware lead times visible, sequences the configuration work that can't start until equipment arrives, schedules the testing phases that can't be rushed, and defines the cutover window that has to be executed precisely. Why Network Infrastructure Projects Need Careful Scheduling

Network infrastructure has three characteristics that make scheduling critical:

Hardware lead times are long and variable. Switches, routers, and firewalls from major vendors like Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, and Fortinet have lead times that currently range from 8 to 20 weeks or more, depending on model and market conditions. If you order hardware when you need it, you won't receive it when you need it.

Work must be sequenced. You can't configure a switch that hasn't been racked. You can't test failover until both primary and secondary paths are configured. You can't migrate users until testing is complete. Every task has a predecessor.

Cutover windows are finite. Most enterprise network cutovers happen during off-hours maintenance windows — typically Friday night to Sunday morning. If the work isn't ready when the window opens, you either push the cutover date (another week of risk with the old infrastructure) or execute an unprepared cutover (higher risk of outage). The Gantt is what ensures you're ready when the window arrives.

Phase 1: Requirements Gathering and Design (Weeks 1–4)

Every network project starts with understanding what the network needs to support.

The design approval milestone is a gate. Procurement cannot start until the design is approved — because the design determines what hardware is being purchased. Organizations that start ordering equipment before the design is final often order the wrong equipment or miss required components.

Phase 2: Vendor Selection and Procurement (Weeks 3–12)

Once the design is approved, procurement begins. This phase runs longer than most projects expect.

Phase 3: Site Survey and Cabling (Weeks 4–16, Partial Overlap with Procurement)

While hardware is on order, physical infrastructure preparation can begin.

Once hardware arrives, configure it before it goes into production. Do this in a staging environment — a lab, a spare rack, or a dedicated staging area — not in the production network.

Staging is where you catch configuration errors in a safe environment. Don't skip it. An error in a firewall rule discovered during staging is a one-hour fix. The same error discovered at 2 AM during production cutover becomes a potential outage.

Phase 5: Testing and Validation (Weeks 16–20)

Before any production cutover, validate that the new infrastructure works as designed.

Failover testing deserves its own Gantt bar. Schedule it separately from other testing — it's disruptive to the staging network and requires focused attention. Test all defined failure scenarios: switch failure, link failure, WAN failure, firewall failure.

Phase 6: Cutover Planning (Weeks 18–22)

Cutover is a project within the project. It needs its own detailed plan.

The go/no-go meeting is a formal gate. All parties confirm that testing is complete, the rollback plan is ready, support teams are available, and stakeholders are notified. If any condition is not met, the cutover is postponed.

Phase 7: Cutover Execution

Cutover is not a Gantt phase — it's a timed sequence measured in hours, not weeks. But its start date appears on the Gantt as a milestone, and all predecessor tasks gate it.

Start there: determine hardware lead times, back-calculate the PO submission deadline, and confirm the project can meet the target cutover date. If lead times make the date impossible, the Gantt reveals that in week one rather than week ten.
