The right level of detail depends on whether you're scheduling daily production or a multi-week project. Both follow the same structure: phases, tasks, owners, and durations.

Track actual vs. planned at the shift level, not the day level. A day of slippage in manufacturing can mean 8 hours of lost production. Update your Gantt chart at every shift change, not just daily. A Gantt chart that reflects actual conditions gives management an accurate picture for customer commitments. A chart that doesn't get updated misleads everyone.
What's the right level of detail for a manufacturing Gantt chart?
Each task should represent at least 2 hours of work. Sub-hour tasks belong in a work instruction or operator checklist, not the Gantt chart. For a 2-week production schedule, 15-40 tasks is typical. For a 6-month capital project, 60-120 tasks is reasonable. Keep the chart readable at a glance: if you need to zoom in to 10% to read task names, you have too many tasks.
