Most PhD students enter their programs with strong academic skills and almost no project management experience. The coursework phase has external structure — syllabi, exams, term papers. The dissertation phase has almost none. You have an advisor, a committee, and a finish line somewhere in the distance. Everything in between is self-imposed.

This is where years disappear. Students spend six months in literature review because no one said it should take three. Common Pitfalls

  • No locked proposal date: Without a hard proposal deadline, students revise endlessly. Set a date, defend on it, and move forward even if the proposal isn't perfect.
  • Literature review as procrastination: Some students review literature for years because it feels like progress. Cap the literature review phase and write the chapter while reviewing, not after.
  • Advisor feedback bottlenecks: If your advisor takes 6 weeks to return drafts, your timeline needs buffer or a conversation. Build expected turnaround time into the Gantt chart explicitly.
  • Ignoring funding runway: Many students stall past their funding years and finish under financial pressure. Map funding end dates against the dissertation timeline from day one.
