Common Mistakes
1. Skipping the site survey. Every warehouse environment is different. Metal shelving, refrigeration units, and dense item arrangements all affect RFID performance. A site survey by an experienced RFID engineer is not optional.
2. Testing tags in isolation, not in operational conditions. A tag that reads perfectly on an open conveyor may read at 70% when packed in a case with other items. Test in the conditions that will exist during live operation.
3. WMS integration as an afterthought. RFID readers that don't integrate with the WMS produce a disconnected data stream that has no operational value. WMS integration must be part of the initial project scope.
4. Insufficient exception handling design. In any RFID deployment, some items won't read. The process for handling non-reads — manual lookup, re-scan, inventory adjustment — must be designed before go-live or staff will make it up on the fly.
