Common Mistakes

1. Starting with the technology. Buying S&OP software before designing the process means the technology shapes the process, not the other way around. Design first; select tools to support the design.

2. No executive attendance. An S&OP meeting that the CEO or COO doesn't attend is not an S&OP meeting — it's a forecast review. Executive presence and decision-making authority are what make S&OP valuable.

3. Consensus plan that nobody owns. "The plan" must have an owner who is accountable for achieving it. Consensus without accountability produces a number that everyone agreed to and nobody is responsible for.

4. Too much detail in the executive meeting. Executive S&OP is for decisions on significant gaps, not for reviewing 200 SKUs at a monthly level. Pre-S&OP exists to filter the signal from the noise.
