About this kitchen remodel timeline
Kitchens have a fixed order that is easy to get wrong. Countertops can't be templated until base cabinets are installed and level, and the backsplash goes on after the countertops are set. Cabinet lead time often decides the whole schedule, so ordering starts at the top of this plan.
The template assumes the room keeps its footprint with some plumbing and electrical changes. If you are moving walls, add a structural step after demolition.
Who it's for: Homeowners, kitchen designers and remodeling contractors.
How to use it
- Open the timeline. Click Open in the editor. The remodel loads with cabinet lead time as the longest bar.
- Enter your supplier lead time. Replace the 35-day cabinet lead time with the date your supplier quoted, so the kitchen isn't torn out longer than needed.
- Overlap prep with lead time. Unlink demolition from the lead-time bar and slide it to finish just before cabinets arrive. In the task panel, remove the predecessor, then set the new start date. Then check that the task that came next still lists the earlier work as a predecessor, so delays keep cascading.
- Share with your installer. Send a read-only link so the installer, fabricator and tile setter see the same sequence.
Planning tips
- Don't demolish until cabinets have a confirmed ship date.
- Countertop fabrication starts only after templating, so keep those two as separate bars.
- Set up a temporary kitchen before demolition; plan for a stretch without a working sink.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the order of a kitchen remodel?
- Design and order, demolition, rough-in and inspection, drywall and flooring, cabinets, countertop templating and install, plumbing and appliance hookup, backsplash, then trim and punch list.
- Why is countertop install separate from templating?
- Fabricators measure the installed cabinets first, then cut the slab. The gap between templating and install is real waiting time and belongs on the schedule.
